The Alchemical Process of Distillation

Humans have practiced the art of distillation for thousands of years as a way of capturing the aromatic and water-soluble qualities of plants. Hydrosols—often described as the aromatic waters of a plant—offer a beautifully subtle way to experience the character and essence of herbs in daily life.

Distillation is the process of gently passing steam through fresh plant material to capture both essential oils and hydrosols. While essential oils are highly concentrated and oil-based, hydrosols are the delicate, water-soluble expression of the plant—containing aromatic compounds and the fresh cellular water released during distillation.

Light, vibrant, and versatile, hydrosols can easily be incorporated into everyday rituals. They may be enjoyed as facial mists, body sprays, linen sprays, room mists, or added to baths and personal care routines. Their gentle nature makes them a beautiful way to invite the presence of plants into daily life.

All Animas Botanicals hydrosols are distilled in small batches using a traditional copper alembic still. The plants are cultivated on our farm using regenerative and biodynamic practices or ethically wildcrafted in the Southwest with great care and respect for the surrounding ecosystem.
